In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the city of Calgary, Alberta, mourns the loss of David Mervin Berglund, a 35-year-old man tragically killed in a road rage incident. Following an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, the victim of the road rage incident is identified as David Mervin Berglund, a 35-year-old resident of Calgary. The revelation leaves the community in shock and mourning.

The Road Rage Incident

The incident unfolded on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, around 12:30 p.m. when police received a call from a passenger in a red 2004 Chevrolet Aveo. The occupants reported an on-going road rage incident involving a 2002 GMC Sierra, alleging erratic driving and aggressive behavior, including the brandishing of a knife.

Altercation Escalation

The road rage incident is believed to have originated from a non-injury hit-and-run collision between the Chevrolet Aveo and the GMC Sierra. Despite 9-1-1 dispatchers advising disengagement, the occupants of the Aveo continued to follow the Sierra, leading to an escalating confrontation.

Fatal Turn of Events

In the 6900 block of Temple Drive N.E., the GMC Sierra’s driver pulled over, and the situation took a tragic turn. The driver of the Aveo allegedly kicked the passenger side of the Sierra, prompting the Sierra’s driver to exit the vehicle. In a horrifying twist, the Aveo reversed, striking and pushing the Sierra’s driver into a nearby tree. The injuries proved fatal, and David Berglund was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Legal Consequences

The driver of the Chevrolet Aveo, identified as Steven Allen, 34, of Calgary, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the incident. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024. The passenger of the Aveo was released without charges.
